Duane Perrett Artist Whistler / Sunshine Coast
Being an artist is a lifetime journey, a journey of knowledge, friendships and design.
From a young age I was always creating building or repairing. I have explored many
paths in life and in business. All of which have led and contributed to this exciting,
inspiring time in my life. Ironically it was my past time of sand-blasting wood and stone
that led me to the form of art glass. I have sand etched glass and stone for over 12 years
as a hobby very self-taught. In the last 5 years it has become more artistic even been
featured on the local newspaper’s front page. For eight years I have been in the local
Farmer’s market and have in the last few years begun to show my fused glass. My fusing
interests began to grow into blown glass of which I am beginning to produce more high
end pieces. I have been in juried shows such as the Vandusen Flower and Garden Show,
the Victoria Flower and Garden show and the Filberg Festival as well as many more. I
began learning to fuse glass myself and learned the basis from long time friend Pascal
Simon. In January 2003 I learned more from Bill Basaraba at Cedar Moon Art Glass.
Following up with more advanced techniques from Lynn Chappel of Sunlight Art Glass.
In February of 2003, I went glassblowing at Starfish Glassworks with instructors Morna
Tudor and Jonathan Mossop. Jonathan mentioned that I had the touch, well I was very
touched indeed, and it was becoming a passion. I then have followed up with Malcolm
Macfadyen with weeks of blowing and have taking blowing and fusing courses in Seattle
and Vancouver. I have also taken a course with Brock Craig and Avery Anderson. This
course covered everything from sand-carving, lampworking, fusing slumping and
glassblowing. Last fall I spent a full month at Red Deer College with four different
instructors teaching us each week on different blowing techniques. This past May I went
back for another two week course with Ed Schmid who has written three books on
glassblowing. Working with glass has become a passion and I have become addicted to
this passion.
I am a member of the Whistler Community Arts Council, BC Glass Arts Association and
the Glass Art Assoc of Canada. I have a teaching studio in which I have set up to educate and
inform people on art glass and sandcarving.
